RAND – Developing Interdisciplinary Research Centers for Improving Geriatric Health Care Services

2001-2010 Interdisciplinary research is vital to improving the care of older people, whose complex needs require the integration of social, psychological, and biological elements. A series of grants, totaling $4 million, was awarded to RAND-University of Pittsburgh to create interdisciplinary research centers in geriatrics. These centers brought together faculty members from medicine, nursing, social work and related disciplines to pursue new directions in health services and clinical research for older people.

The centers reported a total of 1,248 accepted manuscripts, 678 professional presentations, and 240 grants awarded during the project period. Career advancements were reported for 41 faculty members associated with the centers. The centers reported that the initiative had considerable impact on generating these outcomes
